Scottish Liberal Democrat energy spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP has today warned that renewables "cannot take a back seat" after a new industry survey showed one in six jobs in the sector in Scotland could be lost over the next twelve months.

Commenting, Mr McArthur said:

"This survey shows the dramatic impact that cuts to support schemes is having on the sector. Despite growth in renewables showing real promise we are now at a crossroads where if no action is taken then huge opportunities will be missed.

"Liberal Democrats oversaw tens of billions of pounds of investment in renewables but the Tories have since launched an assault on the sector. Meanwhile, the SNP are still toying with allowing fracking. This would only distract more investment and jobs from renewables.

"Renewables will play a massive part in the fight against climate change. That's why it cannot take a back seat. Both the UK and Scottish governments must use the powers at their disposal to secure jobs, develop our skills base and deliver on the enormous promise that this sector holds."
