Responding to the phase 2 Audit and Assurance Review of Stop and Search published today by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary for Scotland, Liberal Democrat Justice Spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

"Today's report confirms again that the number of so-called consensual searches, the intrusive and unjustified searches that used to make up the bulk of this activity, has fallen significantly. A reminder of how unwarranted this conduct was in the first place.

"Now, thanks to Scottish Liberal Democrats and others who challenged SNP Ministers, so-called consensual searches will be abolished and a stop and search procedure will be clearly defined in law.

"We must now ensure that the new code of practice is fair and transparent, builds on the progress and confines industrial scale stop and search to history."
