Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP has today branded the Scottish Government consultation on a second independence referendum a "damaging distraction" and urged the Scottish Government to get on with the day job for the sake of our economy, education, NHS and police.

The consultation on a draft Scottish Independence Referendum bill closes today.

Mr Rennie said:

"Two years ago the First Minister promised a once in a lifetime vote. The same problems with independence remain yet rather than set her Government to the task of fixing our education system and supporting our health service and police, she wastes Scottish Government resources on this damaging distraction.

"The will-she, won't-she uncertainty from the First Minister runs the risk of causing considerable damage to our economy and to the country. We have enough uncertainty with Brexit, we don't need more with independence.

"On a day that we heard from the Federation of Small Businesses that business confidence in Scotland continues to plummet, instead of droning on about independence the First Minister should get on with the day job for the sake of our economy, education, NHS and police."
