Speaking in response to the publication of Higher and National 5 exam results Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Tavish Scott MSP said:

"Waiting for exam results is always a nerve-wracking experience for pupils and parents alike. Pupils, students and teachers worked incredibly hard for these results and they deserve congratulations for their achievements.

"In weeks to come we will need to consider the overall pass rate but today is about celebrating with pupils and students who got the grades they need and ensuring that those who did not do as well as they had hoped get the support they require.

"In 21st century Scotland the education system must equip young people with the skills they need to succeed in life, whether they chose work, vocational courses or go to university. The results today are just one step in a long journey."
