North East Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP Alison McInnes today welcomed plans by the Post Office to move its branch in St Giles Terrace.

Following a consultation with customers the new St Mary's branch will be housed in the Countdown Family Store, 20 St Giles Terrace, very near to the previous branch. It will be a main-style branch, as part of a national modernisation programme. The open-plan branch will offer the same services as before but have longer opening hours, including seven day opening.

Mrs McInnes said: "This is good news. With so many cutbacks these days it is refreshing to hear of investment in a local service. The post office is at the heart of many of our communities, and I am sure this will be well supported by the people of St Mary's in Dundee."

Dundee City West Liberal Democrat campaigner Daniel Coleman who was born and bred in St Mary's also welcomed the plans as "great news for all the folk in St Mary's."

The modernised branch will be ready for business at 1pm on Thursday 24 March at the same time as the old branch closes so there should be no inconvenience to customers. A Post Office spokesperson said posters will be displayed in the branch to let customer know if there is any reason for the date to change and provide further detail.
