The Liberal Democrat Business Advisory Group has today outlined plans to put money and power directly back into the hands of local businesses and regional economies.

Senior business figures have crafted a Business Prospectus which reinforces plans by the Liberal Democrats to:

  • Balance the books on time and fairly;
  • Revitalise and upgrade local transport infrastructure;
  • Provide a fertile environment for small businesses to excel; and
  • Divert money and resources away from Whitehall.

Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg said:

"For decades local businesses and regional economic powerhouses across the country were kept back by Whitehall holding all the money and calling the shots.

"Our plans will create both a stronger economy and fairer society, putting power back in the hands of local businesses."

Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Vince Cable added:

"In government we helped businesses create two million jobs and over two million new apprenticeships.

"This could only have been achieved by creating the right economic environment for businesses to thrive, but there is more to do."

"Labour simply don't understand that businesses and the people that work within them are the engines of growth and the Conservatives are seriously undermining our country's economic stability by threatening to pull us out of the biggest single market in the world.

"Only the Liberal Democrats can be trusted to balance the books fairly, re-balance the economy, and fight to keep Britain's prominent place in a reformed EU to protect our trade and our jobs."

During the election campaign 50 business leaders, entrepreneurs and philanthropists signed a letter stating that "the Liberal Democrats are the only party that can anchor Britain in the centre ground".

Just weeks later, 20 green businesses also published a letter saying the Liberal Democrats "have consistently acted to make this country cleaner, greener and more open to investment in renewables".
