Scottish Liberal Democrats have today backed a campaign urging the Scottish Government to suspend all mesh implant surgery until a safety inquiry takes place.

The Scottish Mesh Survivors Campaign put their case to Holyrood's Petition Committee today. Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Jim Hume MSP personally met with members of the group afterwards.

Commenting on the calls, Mr Hume said:

"I am fully behind calls to suspend all mesh implant surgery until aJim HumeJim Hume full safety inquiry takes place. Meeting with many of the women today it is clear that the side-effects are not isolated or one-offs. The Scottish Government's response to these concerns has so far been lukewarm.

"Scottish ministers have not agreed to mandatory reporting of any side effects, which would allow health boards to get a clearer idea of the bigger picture. Listening to and meeting with the women of the Scottish Mesh Survivors campaign today I am clear that their concerns, backed by evidence, should be acted upon sooner to ensure more women do not face these devastating side-effects."
