Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Liam McArthur has Liam McArthurLiam McArthurwelcomed new funding to assist secondary school teachers to deliver the new national qualifications but said that eyebrows would be raised over the timing of the Scottish Government announcement.

The announcement comes days before education unions are to give evidence on the progress of Curriculum for Excellence at the Scottish parliament's education committee.

Mr McArthur said:

"This additional funding is very welcome given the concerns we have heard about problems in schools across Scotland with the delivery of the new national exams. Teachers, pupils and staff have been rightly anxious about the impact these problems could have on exam results later in the year.

"Eyebrows will be raised, however, over the timing of this announcement by Ministers. It surely cannot be a coincidence that with the parliament's education committee due to take evidence from teacher unions early next week, suddenly we see an acceptance by Ministers that action is needed. Who knows, this could be a useful precedent on other issues."
