Mr McArthur's comments came after claims from the Educational Institute of Scotland that a 'toxic combination' of budget cuts and changes to the curriculum has left some teachers at breaking point.

Commenting, Mr McArthur said:

"The SNP's record of fewer teachers, higher class sizes and an attitude of 'Ministers know best' is beginning to burn bridges with the people delivering education to our children. This will concern parents and particularly pupils across Scotland, who risk losing out as a result"
