"Scottish Liberal Democrats are pleased that SNP Ministers seem set to adopt Nick Clegg's plans to introduce free school meals to all P1-P3 pupils. A healthy meal in the middle of the day will encourage positive eating habits, improve concentration in the classroom and ease pressure on household budgets. This is a step towards our plans to give more children the best start in life.

"Scottish Liberal Democrats are committed to building a fairer society for people in Scotland and we have put forward a number of measures to do this including free school meals and the important extension of free nursery provision. Alex Salmond has listened to us on free school meals and with the budget in sight we hope that he is willing to listen again on our plans to extend nursery provision in line with that being offered in England."
