"For months we have been told that the White Paper would be the answer to all of our questions, that it would detail all of the sums behind the assertions. Instead we've been handed a compendium of existing assertions and a glossary of uncosted policies. People will be disappointed that we are none the wiser on the SNP's plans today than we were yesterday.

"The SNP have the power to deliver better childcare now but their message to our children is: you will not get what you need until we get what we want.

"What remains clear is our strong position within the UK partnership of nations. We still have the pound. We still have EU membership. We still have the broad shoulders of the UK, which allow us to work together in the world and make our own decisions on education and the NHS at home. The SNP are no clearer on how they will cast these UK benefits in stone under their independence plans."
