"Five weeks ago the Scottish Government's own fiscal commission said that an independent Scotland would have to match the UK's deficit targets. Today's IFS report goes further still. An independent Scotland would have to cut deeper and faster than George Osborne. That is not a prospect that is going to sell the nationalist vision.

"Our Liberal Democrat plan for home rule would give Scotland more tax and spend powers whilst remaining part of the wider UK partnership of nations. This report shows that in the face of big economic decisions we absorb pressures better with the broad shoulders of the UK."
