Commenting on news that St Andrews University principal ProfessorWillie Rennie MSPWillie Rennie MSP Louise Richardson has emailed all staff to urge them to defy political pressure, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP said:

"Louise Richardson is right to send a warning shot across the bow of those who want to silence academics in the independence debate. She is a formidable Principal and those who may be tempted to put her staff under some kind of nationalist cosh should beware - whether they be political activists or government ministers. I would urge other Principals to follow her lead.

"Our much cherished academic freedoms must not be the victim of an increasingly desperate nationalist campaign."
