Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP hasLiam McArthurLiam McArthur called on Mike Russell to set the record straight on student support funding after it emerged grant funding is not rising with inflation, and is instead being held at 2013-14 cash levels.

This appeared to contradict earlier statements made by the Education Secretary to the Education Committee during scrutiny of the budget.

In response, Liam McArthur said:

"When I pressed the Cabinet Secretary on suggestions by one of his former advisors that grant funding may not go up with inflation he told me I was wrong. A fortnight later the figures were published which show that it was the Cabinet Secretary who was wrong.

"The Education Secretary told the Education Committee that grant funding was being uprated with inflation. Figures released this week has shown this is not the case. The Education Secretary needs to set the record straight. He either mislead the committee or the figures are wrong. Students deserve to know which it is to be."
