Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Jim Hume MSP has saidJim HumeJim Hume that the Scottish Government has raised the white flag on tackling health inequalities because of its obsession with independence.

After statistics on health inequalities were released today the SNP minister for Public Health issued a statement where only one line set out how the Scottish Government is addressing health inequalities. The remainder of the statement focussed on the SNP's obsession with independence. This comes only 5 years after the Ministerial Task Force on Health Inequalities published the Equally Well report.

Commenting, Mr Hume said:

"In 5 years the Scottish Government seems to have run out of steam in tackling health inequalities. Instead of setting out how they will tackle health inequalities today they are twiddling their thumbs and obsessing about their independence plans.

"This miserable response to the real health inequalities faced across Scotland only shows that the SNP will do and say anything to achieve independence. Only 5 years ago they set out a detailed report on how to tackle health inequalities. What a difference a referendum makes.

"Perhaps they should listen to the BMA who have today set out a meaningful way to reduce health inequalities in Scotland."
