Scottish Liberal Democrat Health spokesman Jim Hume MSP has warned thatJim HumeJim Hume Ministers must provide schools with clarity on guidelines for the treatment of pupils with long-term health conditions.

Mr Hume was commenting after new research from Scotland's Children's Commissioner revealed almost 1 in 4 schools were unaware of guidance in this area first issued by the Scottish Government in 2001. Almost 1 in 10 of schools responding to enquiries from the Children's Commissioner did not know their local authority's policy relating to the administration of medicines in schools.

Commenting, Mr Hume said:

"The fact that around 1 in 4 schools contacted by the Children's Commissioner were unaware of the guidance for pupils with long-term health conditions is a real concern. These are pupils who often have very specific and significant health needs. It is important that they receive the help they need to avoid missing out on an education.

"What this research reveals is a picture of health care in schools that is inconsistent or patchy with real confusion over policy and the law in this area. No-one is doubting the commitment of teachers and other school staff to helping children in their care who have long term conditions, but Ministers must act to ensure that we have clarity over key guidelines."
