Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesman Jim Hume MSP has praisedJim HumeJim Hume the Scottish Government's decision to implement legislation to deal with the treatment of cremated remains and convene a nationwide inquiry into the policies and practices at crematoria in Scotland.

This comes after Mr Hume backed calls for a national inquiry over the weekend.

Police have received 30 complaints relating to cases where it is claimed that the ashes of deceased babies were disposed of without the knowledge of parents.

Commenting, Mr Hume said:

"Ministers have taken the correct decision and put the needs and wishes of bereaved parents first. We now need the commission to work efficiently towards developing recommendations which will prevent this happening again in future.

"This is the first step of progress on what has been an extremely upsetting journey for the bereaved parents. The inquiry and subsequent legislation should give parents the answers they need and it is right that Ministers have agreed to do this on a Scotland-wide basis."
