A new deal on the Common Agricultural Policy is a step closer after EUGeorge LyonGeorge Lyon Farm Ministers reached agreement on a mandate in Brussels late last night according to Scottish Liberal Democrat MEP George Lyon.

Mr Lyon was speaking after EU Ministers agreed a new mandate that will allow detailed negotiations on the shape of the new CAP to begin in earnest.

Commenting, Mr Lyon said:

'The agreement reached in Brussels late last night sets the stage for detailed negotiations to begin. It is big step towards ending the uncertainty facing farmers in Scotland and right across the UK.

'Now that the Farm Ministers have reached an agreement on their mandate we can start thrashing out the final shape of a new deal on CAP reform.

'There are 35 meetings pencilled in the diary between now and the end of June and provided there is goodwill and a willingness to compromise on both sides we should be able to strike a deal.'
