"From a health board which so desperately needs to regain public trust, the unwillingness of its chairman to supply Audit Scotland with full and frank information only puts NHS Lothian on the back foot. The fundamental lesson learnt from the waiting times scandal was the categorical need for transparency from our health boards.

"NHS Lothian's full and robust cooperation with Audit Scotland is vital to prevent the massaging of NHS figures in any board in future. I will be urging Ministers to work constructively with all health boards in Scotland to investigate how best to guarantee transparency throughout our health service. Patients deserve no less."
