George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, has welcomed the vote of the European Parliament's Industry, Research and Energy Committee after it supported amendments put down by UK MEPs to the European Commission's off-shore oil and gas regulation.

The amendments mean that the regulation will now go to the full European Parliament as a directive which ensures that, rather than having to adopt a one-size-fits-all approach across EU Member States, the UK will be able to continue with its world renowned safety regime.

Commenting after the vote, Mr Lyon said:

"This vote is great news for Scotland and for safety for our oil and gas operations in the North Sea.

"It was important that we did not allow this vote to force us to lower our standards through a centralised safety regime. UK MEPs from different political parties united to ensure that the hard won safety regime we have in the UK remains the standard that others have to aspire to.

"I'm pleased that MEPs on the Committee listened to our calls to add a degree of flexibility to the proposals. After speaking to many of them before the vote it was clear that our sensible and evidence based approach had won them over."
