Commenting on the agreement reached between Dairy UK, the NFU and the NFUS on a voluntary code of best practice between milk buyers and dairy farmers, Scottish Liberal Democrat rural spokesperson Jim Hume MSP said:

"Between this landmark voluntary code of best practice and the upcoming Groceries Code Adjudicator bill in Westminster I'm confident that we can move towards securing a fair deal for dairy farmers and milk buyers. However the agreement will be toothless if milk buyers fail to hold up their end of the deal.

"This is by no means the finish line. The Scottish Government must pick up the baton and review the code's impact to guarantee honourable words have translated into honourable action. Richard Lochhead must also provide assurances that the option to legislate has not been taken off of the table."
