Borders MP Michael Moore has welcomed news that farmers and dairy processors have agreed to an outline of a dairy industry Code of Practice on milk contracts at the Royal Welsh show.

The finer details of the Code will now be finalised by all parties by the end of August with the intention that in future contracts between farmers and dairy processors will be properly negotiated, fairer and more transparent.

Commenting, Mr Moore said:

"This agreement between farmers and processors on an outline for a dairy code of practice is a breakthrough for dairy farmers in the Borders and across the UK.

"Ahead of the meeting today, I spoke to Caroline Spelman to emphasise how important this issue is for dairy farmers here in the Borders and across Scotland. I am therefore extremely pleased that as a result of the hard work of UK Ministers Caroline Spellman and Jim Paice, an outline deal has been struck which will empower farmers and bring greater fairness to the dairy market.

"I have been having regular discussions with dairy farmers, the NFUS and Caroline Spelman in recent weeks on this issue and we will continue to work together to ensure that, as the details of the agreement are hammered out over the summer, we get the right outcome for our local dairy farmers."
