Former Presiding Officer Lord David Steel, who was one of the founders of the Scotland-Malawi partnership, has described Malawi as "back on the road to recovery" following the installation of the new President, Mrs Joyce Banda.

Lord Steel spoke almost immediately on the telephone with the new President after she took office.

Lord Steel, who was active in the country's transition to multi-party democracy in the 90's said:

"The new President assured me that she is anxious to re-establish relations with the UK following the withdrawal of the British High Commissioner under the increasingly autocratic previous President Mutharika, whose sudden death threatened a constitutional crisis.

"Joyce Banda has quickly moved to reassert basic human rights by sacking the police chief within days of taking office.

"Malawi is back on the road to recovery."
