Commenting as the Scottish Government publishes numeracy attainment levels which shows that attainment drops off significantly as pupils make the transition from primary to secondary school, Scottish Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

"Good literacy and numeracy attainment is vital for our children as they progress through school. These are the building blocks that will allow them to go on and succeed.

"It is therefore a real concern that we are seeing such a pronounced drop off in numeracy attainment between primary and secondary school.

"Work obviously needs to be done on looking at how pupils can be better supported as they transition from primary into secondary. This must be a priority for the Education Secretary."
