Sir Robert Smith, Liberal Democrat MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, has emphasised the need for the lessons of the recent North Sea gas leak to be shared with operators in the North Sea as soon as possible.

Commenting, Sir Robert said:

"Whilst the priority is to bring the gas leak under control, it is vital that any lessons learnt about the cause of the leak are shared with other operators to ensure there is no repeat of such an incident.

"The fact that there is no oil in the well reduces the environmental threat, but the Government and Total must continue to monitor the risk."
