Manipulation of NHS waiting lists deeply shocking

Commenting after the Health Secretary's statement on the review into NHS Lothian's waiting time management, Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP said:

Alison McInnes MSPAlison McInnes MSP"This external report into NHS Lothian's practices is deeply shocking. Deliberately manipulating waiting lists is completely unacceptable and wholly undermines patients' rights to receive treatment within the 12 week guarantee.

"I am deeply concerned by the finding that staff were under "unacceptable pressure" to fiddle lists, with a culture of "no bad news" around waiting times. This culture must change.

"The Cabinet Secretary continues to boast about Scotland's low waiting times but she must ensure that boards are being fully transparent. Not only when reporting to the Scottish Government on progress against targets, but also in keeping individual patients up to date with their own patient journey. The fact that hundreds of patients could be removed from waiting lists at the click of a button shows that individuals do not have enough information to keep track of their journey and challenge any discrepancies.

"I welcome the Cabinet Secretary's assurance that she would look into this issue further."
