Commenting on the 10.8% decrease in the number of further education staff in Scotland in the last year, Scottish Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

Liam McArthur MSPLiam McArthur MSP"This is yet another dramatic fall in the number of staff employed in our colleges and will do nothing to lift morale in a sector that feels under siege at present.

"Scottish Liberal Democrats successfully argued during recent budget negotiations for the government to reverse much of their proposed cut to college budgets. But there is still no sign of the specific allocations to each college, resulting in uncertainty for both colleges and students alike.

"This uncertainty is made worse by Ministers' plans for wholesale college mergers, a process that is likely to lead to further job losses in the years ahead. It is little surprise then that our college feel undervalued by the current SNP government.

"In these tough financial times, however, colleges provide people of all ages with the skills that they need to get up and get on. They are vital to the communities in which they are based throughout Scotland".
