Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP challenged the First Minister today to explain why he has lent his support to Rupert Murdoch, downplaying the role of News International in the phone hacking scandal, and ignoring the hundreds of victims of phone hacking.

Willie Rennie MSPWillie Rennie MSPDuring First Minister's Questions, Mr Rennie asked Alex Salmond whether he believed that phone hacking victims and their families would be satisfied with his failure to stand up to News International.

Commenting Mr Rennie said:

"This week, the First Minister was caught bragging about Rupert Murdoch's support for independence.

"Alex Salmond would rather cosy up to the troubled media tycoon than stand up for the hundreds of victims of phone hacking.

"It has become clear that Mr Murdoch wants to break up Britain in revenge for the Leveson inquiry. Our First Minister is only too happy to leap on that.

"Rather than defend victims he has defended News International and their role in phone hacking.

"The First Minister has put his interests above the victims.

"The First Minister should be ashamed of this grubby deal."
