The Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Willie Rennie MSP, has today called for Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill to make a statement to the Scottish Parliament on the Megrahi case.

Willie Rennie MSPWillie Rennie MSPCommenting, Mr Rennie said:

"Allegations of suppression of evidence and a Greenock Prison release deal between the Justice Secretary and Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi make it essential for a statement to be made to Parliament.

"With today's TV documentaries and book raising new questions about the conviction and release, it is important that the Justice Secretary answers serious questions.

"He needs also to be clear about what happened in the prison cell in Greenock when Mr MacAskill met Mr Megrahi.

"It seems likely that new information will emerge on the Scottish Criminal Cases review Commission findings and evidence.

"All of this should be subject to scrutiny by the Scottish Parliament. The Justice Secretary should volunteer a statement straight away."
