Commenting as the first edition of the Scottish Sun on Sunday has named the SNP's preferred date of the independence referendum, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP said:

"There are currently two consultations underway to debate issues surrounding the referendum but the SNP have gone ahead and announced a date.

"It shows a lack of respect for consultation process in a cynical move to grab the headlines.

"The SNP still haven't explained why they can't get on with it a year earlier. Liberal Democrat Scottish Secretary Michael Moore has laid out how we could hold the vote in 2013 and end the uncertainty caused by the SNP's obsession which, as SSE pointed out last week, could cost jobs."
