Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie has called on the Scottish Government to explain the behaviour of the embattled Education Secretary Mike Russell following the furious reaction of his constituents to the failure of the Scottish Government on the major regional issue of ferries.

Willie Rennie MSPWillie Rennie MSPMr Russell faced heckles, barracking and accusations of condescending behaviour at a packed public meeting in Dunoon earlier in the week.

This was followed within days by the resignation of a key rural schools campaigner against the closure of schools in his constituency.

Commenting, Mr Rennie said:

"Mike Russell needs to openly explain why he has let so many people down on critical regional issues.

"He claimed to fight for the Dunoon-Gourock car ferry but now we have a completely unsatisfactory passenger ferry instead.

"And claimed to stand up for rural schools but now has a major resignation on his hands from the leading rural schools campaigner in the country.

"Prior to the election, Mike Russell claimed that these issues were easy to resolve but now his past is catching up with him.

"The Government must explain the behaviour of one of their key ministers. They must come to Parliament and explain his actions to MSPs and his constituents."
