Commenting as NUS Scotland urge Scotland's ancient universities to recruit more students from further education colleges, Scottish Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

Liam McArthur MSPLiam McArthur MSP"NUS Scotland is right to point out the importance of ensuring our universities are as diverse as possible. That diversity brings educational, economic and cultural benefits, but requires steps to be taken to ensure we attract students from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities.

"It is worrying, therefore, that so many college students are being discouraged from attending some universities in Scotland, with those from poorer backgrounds most adversely affected. These obstacles to transferring between college and university need to be removed if Ministers are serious about widening access.

"Scottish Liberal Democrats support NUS Scotland's calls to look at more radical ways in which we can maintain the quality of our further and higher education systems while also making Scottish degrees more flexible.

"The Education Minister needs to carefully consider NUS Scotland's proposals and ensure that he keeps the road to higher education open to as many students as possible."
