Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP has appealed to Tourism Minister, Fergus Ewing to denounce the doom-mongers of the 2012 London Olympic Games and urge all Scots to get behind the Games.

Willie Rennie MSPWillie Rennie MSPMr Rennie's comments come on the back of a week of negative press about the Games with some believing that Scotland has nothing to gain.

Mr Rennie believes this could not be further from the truth and is so enthusiastic about the games he is prepared have the Olympic rings displayed on the roof of his bungalow in Kelty. Mr Rennie is disappointed by the comments made regarding the suggestion to have the iconic Olympic rings displayed from Edinburgh Castle.

He is an ardent supporter of the Olympics Games and believes that the Games are a great opportunity for the UK to showcase the talent that exists in the UK. It will bring positive benefits to the whole of the UK in terms of tourism and economic revenue. It is also a fantastic opportunity for Scotland to learn best practice for the 2014 Commonwealth Games due to be held in Glasgow.

Mr Rennie has called on the Scottish Government to publicly support the legacy that can be gained from the Games and work closely with officials so Scotland can benefit in a really positive way.

Commenting Mr Rennie MSP said:

"The 2012 Olympics are being held on our doorstep and is a magnificent opportunity, not just for London but for the whole of the UK.

"The rings on the castle may not be to everyone's liking but the unfortunate wall of negative comment failed to recognise the opportunity for us here in Scotland.

"As a sports addict I'm so enthusiastic about the Olympics that I'm prepared to have the iconic Olympic rings displayed on the roof of my bungalow in Kelty.

"The Games will have far reaching effects on all parts of the UK with its legacy being felt throughout the country. The tourism and economic benefits will be ripe for reaping as long as we are ready to capitalise on it.

"I am urging Fergus Ewing to silence the doom-mongers and urge Scots to get behind Scotland's part in the 2012 Olympic Games.

"The Scottish Government needs to play its part to make sure the Olympic Games is something that all of Scotland and the UK can benefit from."
