Speaking in response to the publication of the Housing Statistics for Scotland 2011, Scottish Liberal Democrat housing spokesperson Jim Hume MSP said:

"The SNP shout about their council house building but only whisper about their cut in housing association houses.

"Their own figures show that there were only 7,667 vacant units of local authority stock at the end of the quarter but 194,992 applications for housing.

"Despite this need, overall social rented housing has dropped. The SNP have shuffled the figures away from the headlines to hide the decrease in new-build housing association and council homes. It is no use to those who need housing to be told only the good half of the picture."

The number of housing association completions is in Table 1 of the Scottish Government's publication. http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Resource/Doc/356645/0120523.pdf

It shows a decline from 5576 to 5111. That cancels out the increase in council housing boasted about in the press release. Overall, social rented completions fell from 5960 to 5694.
