Commenting on the news that HMP Noranside is set to close in October, Scottish Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP said:

"In March I said that Noranside's temporary stay of execution was nothing more than a cynical ploy by the Justice Minister to get his party past the election; sadly today's news confirms that was indeed the case.

"The closure of Noranside is extremely disappointing, and the news will be met with dismay.

"Noranside has had a good record of preparing prisoners to re-join society. Rehabilitation is an important part of protecting communities and reducing re-offending. Its closure will diminish the prison service in Scotland, and could lead to more re-offending and more crime."
