Responding to Alex Salmond's calls to Liberal Democrats, Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader Willie Rennie MSP said:

"At a time of economic crisis, rising energy bills and stretched hospitals and schools, the SNP have spent the whole week attacking the Liberal Democrats.

"Alex Salmond is an expert at dodging responsibility for his actions. As First Minister he has a great responsibility to improve public services, invest in our transport system and tackle the threat of climate change. Yet he prefers to play party politics instead of doing the job he is paid £130,000 to do.

"The Scottish National Party is not a liberal party. Unlike us they are inward not outward looking. They want to horde power in the centre rather than give it to communities and they will stoop to anything to split Scotland from the rest UK.

"My party's voice will continue to be the strong liberal voice that Scotland needs, standing up against the SNP Bulldozer for nationalism."
