Figures show human cost of the SNP’s mismanagement of Scottish education: McArthur

Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP has expressed grave concern over a report out today from the GTCS on teacher numbers, which reveals that only 1 in 5 probationer teachers are in permanent, full-time jobs after qualifying in 2009-10.

Commenting Mr McArthur said:

"These figures lay bare the human cost to the SNP's mismanagement of Scottish education.

"After years training to become teachers, hundreds are still being left high and dry and unable to find work.

"This is bad news for the teachers concerned, as well as Scotland's school pupils, particularly if probationers decide to walk away from the profession after being unable to find work.

"The SNP continues to make bold promises in terms of teachers numbers but its track record so far does not inspire confidence. Teachers, pupils and parents will all be expecting far better over the next five years."
