Borders MP Michael Moore has welcomed the announcement that the Government is to begin a study into alternatives to like-for-like replacement of Trident.

The study will review the costs, feasibility and credibility of alternative systems and postures and it will be overseen by the Liberal Democrat Minister for the Armed Forces, Nick Harvey.

Commenting, Mr Moore said:

"As a Liberal Democrat, I want to see the UK's nuclear capacity reduced to a more affordable and appropriate level and this study will enable us to make an informed case for such alternatives to the current system.

"This move is in addition to the value-for-money study on Trident that the Liberal Democrats negotiated in the Coalition Agreement. This has resulted in substantial savings - £3.2bn over 10 years - and a 25% reduction in the number of nuclear warheads while maintaining our deterrence capabilities.

"During this time of economic difficulty, it is vital that we reduce our spending on our expensive nuclear weapons system and the Liberal Democrat's influence in Government is making this happen."
