Commenting on the Scottish Fishermen's Federation's warning that banning fish discards could have serious implications for Scotland's fishing industry, Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesperson Liam McArthur said:

"No one disputes the need to tackle the economic and environmental madness of discards, but no one should be fooled into thinking that it is straightforward. If it were it would have been dealt with by now.

"The European Commission must listen to the views of the Scottish Fishing Industry. It has experience of working in a mixed fishery and delivering measures to sustainably manage stocks.

"Playing to the gallery on this issue only risks making a bad situation worse."
