Scott challenges two-jobs Salmond10.37.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Sat 6th Jun 2009
Dundee LibDems today (Saturday 6th June) backed comments by Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott MSP who has challenged the First Minister to stand down as MP for Banff and Buchan and concentrate on being a full time First Minister and MSP for Gordon. Next Wednesday the Scottish Parliament will be voting on the Scottish Government's Sexual Offences Bill. The Bill has been described by SNP Ministers as "a once in a generation opportunity", "an historic opportunity", and by Rape Crisis Scotland as "a crucial opportunity". But the First Minister confirmed that he will not be there to vote as he will be in London to vote for an immediate General Election. Commenting, Mr Scott said, "The First Minister has two jobs, in two cities, in two parliaments for two constituencies. Too many people are being let down. "The First Minister's constituents in Banff and Buchan expect him to be in the House of Commons at 4 o'clock next Wednesday to vote for an immediate General Election. "His constituents in Gordon expect him to be here at the same time to vote on important laws to protect people from crime. "The country and this Parliament expect him to do his duty as First Minister of Scotland by voting for laws that his government is proposing. "Scotland deserves a full time First Minister and Banff and Buchan deserve a full time MP. If there's not to be a General Election after next Wednesday, the First Minister should make sure there's a local one in Banff and Buchan." Here in Dundee, LibDem Council Group Leader said, "It is so obvious that Alex Salmond tries to spin too many plates, and fails to properly serve his constituents and the people of Scotland."
