Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Saturday 27th September) backed comments by Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott MSP for politicians of all parties to work together to secure the future of Scotland's financial services industry.

Last Wednesday, Mr Scott met senior Lloyds TSB executive Archie Kane to discuss the proposed merger of Lloyds TSB with HBOS. This was one of a series of meetings with political leaders that Mr Kane held, and after what he described as "a highly productive meeting", Tavish Scott said, "It is clear that Lloyds recognise the importance of financial services to Scotland's DNA. It is our job as politicians to work across parties and across business to turn that into results.

"Working together offers us the best chance of securing all that can be secured for the bank staff, their customers and the prospect of head office functions being based in Scotland.

"I am, however, concerned for the future of the local branch network that the newly merged bank will inherit and also the impact of the merger on individual account holders and small businesses across the country. Less competition on the high street will remain a worry."

Here in Dundee, LibDem City Councillor Fraser Macpherson said, "It is vitally important that politicians of all parties work together to protect Scottish banking jobs and secure a bright future for the Scottish financial industry.

"The latest concerns now affecting Bradford & Bingley again highlight the challenges facing the financial sector across the UK."
