Dundee LibDems' concern over report showing gender equality "will take generations"

August 1, 2007 6:34 AM

Dundee Liberal Democrats have today (Wednesday 1st August) expressed concern about the findings of an Equal Opportunities Commission Report showing that equality between men and women in Scotland could take generations to achieve.

The EOC report - "Completing the Revolution" indicates that the part-time pay gap will take some 30 years to close, and the full-time pay gap 20 years.

Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, Jo Swinson MP said, "This report makes for worrying reading. Despite 30 years of equalities legislation, there remains a shocking income gap between men and women. There is a real need for improved childcare and better flexible working to allow more parents to get into work."

Here in Dundee, Liberal Democrat councillor for Strathmartine Ward, Cllr Helen Dick, said, "It is deeply concerning that, in 2007, very many women have the option of only low paid work. There is a real need to tackle this, to adequately support families and the effects of this situation in terms of continued child poverty across the country."
