Dundee LibDems back calls for SNP Leader to quit Westminster

Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Friday 6th July) backed calls for Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond MP/MSP to quit his Westminster seat. It follows the passing of the 100th day since Mr Salmond last spoke in the Commons.

Earlier this week, he promised to keep a pledge to collect one salary after it emerged he had still been receiving both his MP's and MSP's salaries.

During the period of his absence, Westminster MPs have debated and voted on crucial issues including an inquiry into the Scottish elections, cheaper rural fuel, an inquiry into Iraq and measures to secure the UK's borders. Alex Salmond has been present for none of these.

Liberal Democrat Shadow Scottish Secretary, Alistair Carmichael MP said, "Clearly Mr Salmond is finding two jobs too much to cope with.

"However, the good people of Banff and Buchan should not be suffering the effects of this over-reach. Alex Salmond's constituents voted for him in good faith. He must now do the decent thing and resign his Westminster seat."

Here in Dundee, local LibDem parliamentary secretary Michael Charlton said, "This is a classic case of a politician having a job too many. Mr Salmond should accept that the people of his two separate constituencies each deserve full-time representation."
