Dundee Liberal Democrats supporting Fairtrade Fortnight in the City

February 26, 2007 4:50 PM

Dundee Liberal Democrats have today (Monday 26th February) welcomed Fairtrade Fortnight and reaffirmed their commitment to keeping Dundee a Fairtrade City.

Dundee was granted fairtrade status by the Fairtrade Foundation in 2004, which means that Fairtrade products are readily available in many Dundee shops and served in local cafés and catering establishments.

Cllr Helen Dick, Liberal Democrat councillor for Strathmartine and the City Council Vice Convener of Environmental Services and Sustainability, said, "I'm proud of the fact that Dundee has Fairtrade status.

"We need to push Fairtrade further by increasing the choices to buy Fairtrade clothes and accessories, Fairtrade furniture and gifts.

"The Fairtrade Mark guarantees a fair and stable price to farmers in developing countries, it also guarantees consumers a top-quality and environmentally-friendly product. It is such a simple and direct way to make a big difference to the lives of poor families in developing countries.

"It's better to help people support themselves through trade than handouts from the government. Fairtrade is a hand-up, not a hand-out."
