Jo Swinson MP calls for curbs on excessive supermarket packaging - backing from Dundee LibDems

Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Sunday 4th February) backed comments made by Jo Swinson MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, who has raised concerns in Parliament over excessive packaging use by supermarkets and food producers.

Ms Swinson last week proposed a motion in Parliament calling for a reduction in excess packaging by supermarkets and also raised the issue of recyclable packaging.

Ms Swinson said, "Packaging now accounts for 17% of the average household food budget. We are all aware of the need to recycle more and produce less waste, but supermarkets and food producers must take more responsibility over the often excessive way goods are packaged.

"Cutting excess packaging would reduce the burden not only on consumers trying to reduce waste, but on their wallets as well."

Locally, here in Dundee, Liberal Democrat City Councillor and Vice Convener of the Council's Environmental Services and Sustainability Committee, Cllr Helen Dick, said, "I thoroughly support Jo Swinson's calls for curbs on excessive supermarket packaging. It is really important that this issue is properly addressed."
