Dundee LibDems slam token meter charges hitting poorest consumers

Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Sunday 21st January) said that recent research showing that electricity companies are gaining up to £91 million a year from some of the poorest households, through back charging on token meters was not just very concerning but demanded action on the part of the companies.

These charges have been taking place when electricity companies recalibrate meters to reflect rising energy prices. Recalibrations are happening infrequently and households can be hit with back charges of up to £800 each.

Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Susan Kramer MP said, "Electricity customers on a token meter are amongst the most vulnerable users.

"In many cases they have chosen this option specifically to budget effectively for their energy bills. The last thing they need is to be hit with sudden unexpected demands."

Michael Charlton, Dundee LibDem local party secretary, said, "This practice cannot be justified and the electricity companies must act now to stop this."
