Dundee LibDems say latest evidence highlights need for action on climate change

January 13, 2007 11:13 AM

Dundee Liberal Democrats have today (Saturday 13th January) backed calls by Scottish LibDem leader Nicol Stephen MSP for immediate action on climate change.

This follows news that, after a study by a team of scientists from Aberdeen University and the Scottish Agricultural College in Inverness, it has been shown that Scottish marine life is suffering as a result of rising water temperatures.

Nicol Stephen said, "I believe the biggest change we can make is to end our dependence on fossil fuels and build a 100% renewable future. We are on course to beat the existing target of 40% of electricity from renewable sources by 2020, but we must go further. I want renewable energy to supply 100% of Scotland's electricity by 2050."

Locally, here in Dundee, City Council LibDem Vice Convener of Environmental Services and Sustainability, Cllr Helen Dick, echoed Nicol Stephen's comments, adding, "This is clear evidence of damage to Scotland's marine life and decisive action is necessary to tackle the detrimental effects of climate change. Nicol is absolutely correct to emphasise the need to end our dependence of fossil fuels."
