Dundee LibDems campaign to save the local Post Office Network

January 2, 2007 7:19 AM

Following the recently announced plan by the Labour Westminster Government to close 2,500 post offices, Dundee Liberal Democrats have today added their support to a national campaign for action to protect the Post Office network.

Dundee LibDems are supporting calls for the Government to stop the unnecessary Post Office closure programme, and instead free the business from restrictive regulation, invest in the future of the network and stop removing government business to safeguard our post offices.

Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Edward Davey MP said, "This is the death knell for thousands of local shops and rural businesses that depend on their local post office. Rural and deprived urban communities will feel betrayed by these mass post office closures.

"Unless Ministers free post offices from Royal Mail's restrictive contracts, even more closures can be expected.

"The Government's failure to announce plans on Royal Mail is an astonishing dereliction of duty and smacks of political cowardice."

Dundee Liberal Democrat spokesperson Murray Dick added, "We have already seen the closure of Post Office branches in Dundee in recent years. Dundee Liberal Democrats are seriously concerned that local residents will lose more branches in coming years under Labour's closure plans.

"We have launched the petition so that people in Dundee can send Tony Blair and Gordon Brown a clean message: don't sound the last post for our Post Offices, we want them kept open."
