Michael Charlton says Queen's speech signals yet more unnecessary legislation
Dundee Liberal Democrats have today (Thursday 16th November) said that yesterday's Queen's Speech showed that the Labour Government was "the triumph of quantity over quality" and showed the Labour Government has "long since run out of steam."
Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Menzies Campbell MP, has accused the Government of 'statutory addiction' and commented that this Queen's Speech was 'remarkably similar to those which have gone before'.
Sir Menzies said "After nearly ten years in office the government and the Prime Minister are still chasing the same elusive goals and the same elusive headlines.
"Devoting time, resources and scrutiny of complex problems such as anti-social behaviour could be more effectively addressed by one piece of legislation rather than the four already passed and the one proposed in this Queen's Speech."
Locally, Dundee LibDem local party secretary Michael Charlton said, "The Government should be repealing the unnecessary laws that compromise traditional British freedoms, rather than passing more.
"Additionally, it is disappointing little was done to help pensioners. Raising the level of the basic state pension and scrapping means testing would have helped millions of elderly citizens, but this seems not to be one of Labour's priorities."
