Dr Sneddon says carbon emissions are unsustainable

Dundee East Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesperson Clive Sneddon has today (Saturday 11th November) welcomed the recent Liberal Democrat research which shows that Dundee is doing better than the UK as a whole in keeping down the carbon emissions that feed climate change, but is still emitting more than three times as much carbon dioxide as the global average.

Dr Sneddon said, "From this research, Dundee emits 1,160,000 tonnes a year, which means 8.1 tonnes per person as against a UK average of 9.3 tonnes per person. However, both figures are a lot higher than the global average of about 2.5 tonnes per person. On the internationally recognised principle of contraction and convergence, we all need to reduce carbon emissions to reach a sustainable level that will stop climate chaos, including extreme temperatures, rising sea levels and storms.

"The changes need to include more energy efficiency in homes and businesses, and a reorganisation of the national grid to allow it to accommodate renewables through micro generation as well as through large scale wind farms. Only the Liberal Democrats have made concrete proposals to shift away from Income tax to penalising polluters through the green tax switch, which also advocates simple changes like turning down heating wherever possible and switching off televisions rather than leaving them on standby.

Clive concluded, "If you would like to help by supporting our Green Tax Switch campaign to put pressure on the government to take action this parliamentary session, please write to Chris Huhne MP at the House of Commons or follow the link below:
